Harry Bosch met Mickey Haller here in the Lincoln Lawyer. Philippe’s is the real deal, been here 110 years and still going strong. We were told that before a Dodgers home game (Dodger Stadium is just over a mile away) expect to see a sea of Dodger Blue. As the game was already in the 1st inning when we arrived, we were able to order right away and had our choice of seating. Philippe’s is known to the home of the Original French Dipped sandwich, it’s the specialty of the house and consists of either roast beef, roast pork, leg of lamb, turkey, pastrami or ham served on a lightly textured, freshly baked French roll which has been dipped in the natural gravy of the roasts. Swiss, American, Cheddar, Monterey Jack or Blue cheese may be added. We opted for the beef “double dip” with cheddar, a side of coleslaw, and two Kosher sour dill pickles. At the risk of being taken for snobs, the French Dipped beef sandwiches were tasty, but not quite up to the level of the French Dip at the Palm Beach Grill. The home made coleslaw on the other hand was probably the best we’ve ever had.
I’m loving your trip! I googled Phillippe The Original Coleslaw recipe, but sadly no luck. I am looking for a really good recipe. I did read a little French-dipped history: “Philippe Mathieu, its founder, invented the sandwich in 1918 when he accidentally dropped a French roll into a juice-filled roasting pan, and the customer said he would eat the “dipped” sandwich anyway.”
Glad you’re enjoying it! We’re having a blast! Raye will be looking for a great coleslaw recipe to share.
Looks delicious! I’ll have to add it to my bucket list.
